Understanding for Asaph. Attend, O my people, to my law: incline your ears to the words of my mouth.

aperiam in parabula os meum loquar enigmata antiqua
aperiam in parabola os meum eloquar propositiones ab initio
I will open my mouth in parables: I will utter propositions from the beginning.

quae audivimus et cognovimus et patres nostri narraverunt nobis
quanta audivimus et cognovimus ea et patres nostri narraverunt nobis
How great things have we heard and known, and our fathers have told us.
|
| 4 |
non sunt abscondita a filiis eorum a generatione sequenti narrante laudes Domini et potentiam eius et mirabilia eius quae fecit
non sunt occultata a filiis eorum in generationem alteram narrantes laudes Domini et virtutes eius et mirabilia eius quae fecit
They have not been hidden from their children, in another generation. Declaring the praises of the Lord, and his powers, and his wonders which he hath done.

statuit contestationem Iacob et legem posuit in Israhel quae mandavit patribus nostris ut docerent filios suos
et suscitavit testimonium in Iacob et legem posuit in Israhel quanta mandavit patribus nostris nota facere ea filiis suis
And he set up a testimony in Jacob: and made a law in Israel. How great things he commanded our fathers, that they should make the same known to their children:

ut cognosceret generatio subsequens filii nascituri surgent et narrabunt filiis suis
ut cognoscat generatio altera filii qui nascentur et exsurgent et narrabunt filiis suis
That another generation might know them. The children that should be born and should rise up, and declare them to their children.

ut ponant in Deo spem suam et non obliviscantur cogitationum eius et mandata eius custodiant
ut ponant in Deo spem suam et non obliviscantur opera Dei et mandata eius exquirant
That they may put their hope in God and may not forget the works of God: and may seek his commandments.
|

ut non sint sicut patres eorum generatio declinans et provocans generatio quae non praeparavit cor suum et non credidit Deo spiritus eius
ne fiant sicut patres eorum generatio prava et exasperans generatio quae non direxit cor suum et non est creditus cum Deo spiritus eius
That they may not become like their fathers, a perverse and exasperating generation. A generation that set not their heart aright: and whose spirit was not faithful to God.

filii Efraim intendentes et mittentes arcum terga verterunt in die belli
filii Effrem intendentes et mittentes arcus conversi sunt in die belli
The sons of Ephraim who bend and shoot with the bow: they have turned back in the day of battle.

non custodierunt pactum Dei sui et in lege eius noluerunt ingredi
non custodierunt testamentum Dei et in lege eius noluerunt ambulare
They kept not the covenant of God: and in his law they would not walk.
|
| 11 |
et obliti sunt commutationum eius et mirabilium eius quae ostendit eis
et obliti sunt benefactorum eius et mirabilium eius quae ostendit eis
And they forgot his benefits, and his wonders that he had shewn them.
|
| 12 |
coram patribus eorum fecit mirabilia in terra Aegypto in regione Taneos
coram patribus eorum quae fecit mirabilia in terra Aegypti in campo Taneos
Wonderful things did he do in the sight of their fathers, in the land of Egypt, in the field of Tanis.
|
| 13 |
divisit mare et transduxit eos et stare fecit aquas quasi acervum
interrupit mare et perduxit eos statuit aquas quasi utrem
He divided the sea and brought them through: and he made the waters to stand as in a vessel.
|
| 14 |
et duxit eos in nube per diem et tota nocte in lumine ignis
et deduxit eos in nube diei et tota nocte in inluminatione ignis
And he conducted them with a cloud by day: and all the night with a light of fire.
|
| 15 |
scidit petram in deserto et potum dedit quasi de abyssis magnis
interrupit petram in heremo et adaquavit eos velut in abysso multa
He struck the rock in the wilderness: and gave them to drink, as out of the great deep.
|
| 16 |
et eduxit rivos de petra et elicuit quasi flumina aquas
et eduxit aquam de petra et deduxit tamquam flumina aquas
He brought forth water out of the rock: and made streams run down as rivers.
|
| 17 |
et addiderunt ultra peccare ei ut provocarent Excelsum in invio
et adposuerunt adhuc peccare ei in ira excitaverunt Excelsum in inaquoso
And they added yet more sin against him: they provoked the most High to wrath in the place without water.
|
| 18 |
et temptaverunt Deum in cordibus suis petentes cibum animae suae
et temptaverunt Deum in cordibus suis ut peterent escas animabus suis
And they tempted God in their hearts, by asking meat for their desires.
|
| 19 |
et loquentes contra Deum dicebant numquid poterit Deus ponere mensam in solitudine
et male locuti sunt de Deo dixerunt numquid poterit Deus parare mensam in deserto
And they spoke ill of God: they said: Can God furnish a table in the wilderness?
|
| 20 |
ecce percussit petram et fluxerunt aquae et torrentes inundaverunt numquid et panem poterit dare aut praeparare carnem populo suo
quoniam percussit petram et fluxerunt aquae et torrentes inundaverunt numquid et panem potest dare aut parare mensam populo suo
Because he struck the rock, and the waters gushed out, and the streams overflowed. Can he also give bread, or provide a table for his people?

ideo audivit Dominus et non distulit et ignis accensus est in Iacob et furor ascendit in Israhel
ideo audivit Dominus et distulit et ignis accensus est in Iacob et ira ascendit in Israhel
Therefore the Lord heard, and was angry: and a fire was kindled against Jacob, and wrath came up against Israel.

quia non crediderunt Deo nec habuerunt fiduciam in salutari eius
quia non crediderunt in Deo nec speraverunt in salutare eius
Because they believed not in God: and trusted not in his salvation.

| 23 |
et praecepit nubibus desuper et portas caeli aperuit
et mandavit nubibus desuper et ianuas caeli aperuit
And he had commanded the clouds from above, and had opened the doors of heaven.
|
| 24 |
et pluit super eos man ut comederent et triticum caeli dedit eis
et pluit illis manna ad manducandum et panem caeli dedit eis
And had rained down manna upon them to eat, and had given them the bread of heaven.
|
| 25 |
panem fortium comedit vir cibaria misit eis in saturitatem
panem angelorum manducavit homo cibaria misit eis in abundantiam
Man ate the bread of angels: he sent them provisions in abundance.
|
| 26 |
abstulit eurum de caelo et induxit in fortitudine sua africum
transtulit austrum de caelo et induxit in virtute sua africum
He removed the south wind from heaven: and by his power brought in the southwest wind.
|
| 27 |
et pluit super eos quasi pulverem carnes et quasi harenam maris volatilia pinnata
et pluit super eos sicut pulverem carnes et sicut harenam maris volatilia pinnata
And he rained upon them flesh as dust: and feathered fowls like as the sand of the sea.

et ceciderunt in medio castrorum eius in circuitu tabernaculorum eius
et ceciderunt in medio castrorum eorum circa tabernacula eorum
And they fell in the midst of their camp, round about their pavilions.
|
| 29 |
et comederunt et saturati sunt nimis et desiderium eorum adtulit eis
et manducaverunt et saturati sunt nimis et desiderium eorum adtulit eis
So they did eat, and were filled exceedingly, and he gave them their desire:
|
| 30 |
non indiguerunt de cupiditate sua cum adhuc cibus esset in ore eorum
non sunt fraudati a desiderio suo adhuc escae eorum erant in ore ipsorum
they were not defrauded of that which they craved. As yet their meat was in their mouth:
|

furor ergo Dei ascendit super eos et occidit pingues eorum et electos Israhel incurvavit
et ira Dei ascendit in eos et occidit pingues eorum et electos Israhel inpedivit
And the wrath of God came upon them. And he slew the fat ones amongst them, and brought down the chosen men of Israel.

in omnibus his peccaverunt ultra et non crediderunt mirabilibus eius
in omnibus his peccaverunt adhuc et non crediderunt mirabilibus eius
In all these things they sinned still: and they behaved not for his wondrous works.
|
| 33 |
et consumpsit in vanitate dies eorum et annos eorum velociter
et defecerunt in vanitate dies eorum et anni eorum cum festinatione
And their days were consumed in vanity, and their years in haste.
|
| 34 |
si occidebat eos tunc requirebant eum et convertebantur et diluculo consurgebant ad Deum
cum occideret eos quaerebant eum et revertebantur et diluculo veniebant ad Deum
When he slew them, then they sought him: and they returned, and came to him early in the morning.
|
| 35 |
et recordabantur quia Deus fortitudo eorum et Deus excelsus redemptor eorum
et rememorati sunt quia Deus adiutor est eorum et Deus excelsus redemptor eorum est
And they remembered that God was their helper: and the most high God their redeemer.
|
| 36 |
et lactaverunt eum in ore suo et lingua sua mentiti sunt ei
et dilexerunt eum in ore suo et lingua sua mentiti sunt ei
And they loved him with their mouth: and with their tongue they lied unto him:
|
| 37 |
cor autem eorum non erat firmum cum eo nec permanserunt in pacto eius
cor autem ipsorum non erat rectum cum eo nec fideles habiti sunt in testamento eius
But their heart was not right with him: nor were they counted faithful in his covenant.
|
| 38 |
ipse vero misericors propitiabitur iniquitati et non disperdet multumque avertit iram suam et non suscitavit totum furorem suum
ipse autem est misericors et propitius fiet peccatis eorum et non perdet eos et abundabit ut avertat iram suam et non accendet omnem iram suam
But he is merciful, and will forgive their sins: and will not destroy them. And many a time did he turn away his anger: and did not kindle all his wrath.

sed recordatus est quia caro essent spiritus vadens et non revertens
et recordatus est quia caro sunt spiritus vadens et non rediens
And he remembered that they are flesh: a wind that goeth and returneth not.
|
| 40 |
quotiens provocaverunt eum in deserto adflixerunt eum in solitudine
quotiens exacerbaverunt eum in deserto in ira concitaverunt eum in inaquoso
How often did they provoke him in the desert: and move him to wrath in the place without water?
|
| 41 |
et conversi sunt et temptaverunt Deum et Sanctum Israhel concitaverunt
et conversi sunt et temptaverunt Deum et Sanctum Israhel exacerbaverunt
And they turned back and tempted God: and grieved the holy one of Israel.
|
| 42 |
non sunt recordati manus eius diei qua redemit eos a tribulante
non sunt recordati manus eius die qua redemit eos de manu tribulantis
They remembered not his hand, in the day that he redeemed them from the hand of him that afflicted them:
|

qui fecit in Aegypto signa sua et ostenta sua in regione Taneos
sicut posuit in Aegypto signa sua et prodigia sua in campo Taneos
How he wrought his signs in Egypt, and his wonders in the field of Tanis.
|
| 44 |
qui convertit in sanguine fluvios eorum et rivos eorum ut non biberent
et convertit in sanguine flumina eorum et imbres eorum ne biberent
And he turned their rivers into blood, and their showers that they might not drink.
|
| 45 |
qui inmisit eis genus omne muscarum ut comederent eos et ranas ut disperderent eos
misit in eos cynomiam et comedit eos et ranam et disperdit eos
He sent amongst them divers sorts of flies, which devoured them: and frogs which destroyed them.
|
| 46 |
qui dedit brucho germen eorum et laborem eorum lucustae
et dedit erugini fructus eorum et labores eorum lucustae
And he gave up their fruits to the blast, and their labours to the locust.
|
| 47 |
qui occidit in grandine vineas eorum et sycomoros eorum in frigore
et occidit in grandine vineam eorum et moros eorum in pruina
And he destroyed their vineyards with hail, and their mulberry trees with hoarfrost.
|
| 48 |
qui tradidit grandini pascua eorum et iumenta eorum volucribus
et tradidit grandini iumenta eorum et possessionem eorum igni
And he gave up their cattle to the hail, and their stock to the fire.
|
| 49 |
qui misit in eos iram furoris sui indignationem et comminationem et angustiam inmissionem angelorum malorum
misit in eos iram indignationis suae indignationem et iram et tribulationem inmissionem per angelos malos
And he sent upon them the wrath of his indignation: indignation and wrath and trouble, which he sent by evil angels.

munivit semitam furori suo non pepercit morti animae eorum et animantia eorum pesti tradidit
viam fecit semitae irae suae non pepercit a morte animarum eorum et iumenta eorum in morte conclusit
He made a way for a path to his anger: he spared not their souls from death, and their cattle he shut up in death.

et percussit omne primogenitum in Aegypto principium partus in tabernaculis Cham
et percussit omne primitivum in terra Aegypti primitias laborum eorum in tabernaculis Cham
And he killed all the firstborn in the land of Egypt: the firstfruits of all their labour in the tabernacles of Cham.

et tulit veluti oves populum suum et minavit eos sicut gregem in deserto
et abstulit sicut oves populum suum et perduxit eos tamquam gregem in deserto
And he took away his own people as sheep: and guided them in the wilderness like a flock.

et duxit eos cum fiducia et absque timore inimicos autem eorum operuit mare
et deduxit eos in spe et non timuerunt et inimicos eorum operuit mare
And he brought them out in hope and they feared not: and the sea overwhelmed their enemies.

et adduxit eos ad terminum sanctificatum suum montem istum quem possedit dextera eius et eiecit a facie eorum gentes et possidere eos fecit in funiculo hereditatem
et induxit eos in montem sanctificationis suae montem quem adquisivit dextera eius et eiecit a facie eorum gentes et sorte divisit eis terram in funiculo distributionis
And he brought them into the mountain of his sanctuary: the mountain which his right hand had purchased. And he cast out the Gentiles before them: and by lot divided to them their land by a line of distribution.

et conlocavit in tabernaculis eorum tribus Israhel
et habitare fecit in tabernaculis eorum tribus Israhel
And he made the tribes of Israel to dwell in their tabernacles.

et temptaverunt et provocaverunt Deum excelsum et testimonia eius non custodierunt
et temptaverunt et exacerbaverunt Deum excelsum et testimonia eius non custodierunt
Yet they tempted, and provoked the most high God: and they kept not his testimonies.
|
| 57 |
et aversi sunt et praevaricati sunt ut patres eorum incurvati sunt quasi arcus inutilis
et averterunt se et non servaverunt pactum quemadmodum patres eorum conversi sunt in arcum pravum
And they turned away, and kept not the covenant: even like their fathers they were turned aside as a crooked bow.

et provocaverunt eum in excelsis suis et in sculptilibus suis ad aemulandum concitaverunt
et in ira concitaverunt eum in collibus suis et in sculptilibus suis ad aemulationem eum provocaverunt
They provoked him to anger on their hills: and moved him to jealousy with their graven things.

audivit Deus et non distulit et proiecit vehementer Israhel
audivit Deus et sprevit et ad nihilum redegit valde Israhel
God heard, and despised them, and he reduced Israel exceedingly as it were to nothing.

et reliquit tabernaculum Selo tentorium quod conlocavit inter homines
et reppulit tabernaculum Selo tabernaculum suum ubi habitavit in hominibus
And he put away the tabernacle of Silo, his tabernacle where he dwelt among men.

tradidit in captivitatem gloriam suam et decorem suum in manu hostis
et tradidit in captivitatem virtutem eorum et pulchritudinem eorum in manus inimici
And he delivered their strength into captivity: and their beauty into the hands of the enemy.

et conclusit in gladio populum suum et in hereditate sua non distulit
et conclusit in gladio populum suum et hereditatem suam sprevit
And he shut up his people under the sword: and he despised his inheritance.
|

iuvenes eius devoravit ignis et virgines eius nemo luxit
iuvenes eorum comedit ignis et virgines eorum non sunt lamentatae
Fire consumed their young men: and their maidens were not lamented.
|
| 64 |
sacerdotes eius gladio ceciderunt et viduae eius non sunt fletae
sacerdotes eorum in gladio ceciderunt et viduae eorum non plorabuntur
Their priests fell by the sword: and their widows did not mourn.
|
| 65 |
et evigilavit quasi dormiens Dominus quasi fortis post crapulam vini
et excitatus est tamquam dormiens Dominus tamquam potens crapulatus a vino
And the Lord was awaked as one out of sleep, and like a mighty man that hath been surfeited with wine.

et percussit hostes suos retrorsum obprobrium sempiternum dedit eos
et percussit inimicos suos in posteriora obprobrium sempiternum dedit illis
And he smote his enemies on the hinder parts: he put them to an everlasting reproach.

et proiecit tabernaculum Ioseph et tribum Efraim non elegit
et reppulit tabernaculum Ioseph et tribum Effrem non elegit
And he rejected the tabernacle of Joseph: and chose not the tribe of Ephraim:
|

sed elegit tribum Iuda montem Sion quem dilexit
et elegit tribum Iuda montem Sion quem dilexit
But he chose the tribe of Juda, mount Sion which he loved.
|

et aedificavit in similitudinem monoceroton sanctuarium suum quasi terram fundavit illud in saeculum
et aedificavit sicut unicornium sanctificium suum in terra quam fundavit in saecula
And he built his sanctuary as of unicorns, in the land which he founded for ever.

et elegit David servum suum et tulit eum de gregibus ovium sequentem fetas adduxit eum
et elegit David servum suum et sustulit eum de gregibus ovium de post fetantes accepit eum
And he chose his servant David, and took him from the flocks of sheep: he brought him from following the ewes great with young,

ut pasceret Iacob populum eius et Israhel hereditatem eius
pascere Iacob servum suum et Israhel hereditatem suam
To feed Jacob his servant and Israel his inheritance.
|
| 72 |
qui pavit eos in simplicitate cordis sui et in prudentia manuum suarum dux eorum fuit
et pavit eos in innocentia cordis sui et in intellectibus manuum suarum deduxit eos
And he fed them in the innocence of his heart: and conducted them by the skilfulness of his hands.
